WCMD Exclusive Detecting Event at Historic Dorothea Dix Park – Raleigh, NC
Join the Wake County Metal Detecting Club (WCMD) for an exclusive club-only detecting event on the grounds of Historic Dorothea Dix Park, one of Raleigh’s most treasured and storied locations.
Historic Context
Dorothea Dix Park encompasses over 300 acres of land with layers of North Carolina history. It was long the site of Dorothea Dix Hospital (formerly known by other names), and before that portions of the property included the North Carolina Institution for the Blind, Deaf, and Dumb (Blind, Deaf, and Dumb School).
The Blind, Deaf, and Dumb Institution in Raleigh was founded in 1845, providing education and care for individuals with those disabilities.
During the Civil War, this school played an active role in supporting the Confederacy: students in its vocational programs produced material goods for the Confederate war effort. Specifically, male students were involved in making cartridges,…
